Hotel open day for PAs and booking agents

Personal assistants and booking agents are invited to an open day at the Ricoh Arena's award-winning hotel.

James Gwilliam, the newly-appointed sales manager at the 71 Rooms and Silk Suites hotel, has organised the open forum on Friday, July 3.

The informal event in the Jaguar Club and Lounge between noon and 4pm is to encourage current, past and potential clients.

James, who previously worked as sales manager at the Holiday Inn Coventry, said he wanted to encourage PAs, booking agents and event organisers to come along.

"This new position is a great challenge for me and it is great to be working at one of the city's landmark venues," he said.

"I've decided to organise this open event to give people who organise meetings, events, exhibitions and conferences the opportunity to come along and see first-hand the facilities the hotel has to offer.

"As well as providing a mix of pitch-view rooms, mini suites and junior suites, guests can use the Arena Health and Fitness Club and breakfast and dinner is served in the Singers Bar and Bistro.

"Those who attend the open forum can enjoy lunch in the Jaguar Club and Lounge and we will be taking people on guided tours of the hotel to show what their delegates can expect when staying at the Ricoh Arena's hotel.

"This event has been designed to continue to raise awareness of the hotel in the local community and consolidate out position as one of the best hotels in the area after our success in last year's Godiva Awards."

Helen Wilcox, Candice Stevens and Becky Thawley from the 71 Rooms & Silk Suites hotel sold the cookies to staff and visitors to the Ricoh Arena.

Helen said: "The cookies were scrummy. They all had a cherry on the top to mark Red Nose Day and we raised a total of £97 so I would like to thank everyone who bought a cookie in aid of Comic Relief."  See more

First award for Ricoh hotel

First award for Ricoh hotel
The luxury business hotel at the £113 million Ricoh Arena in Coventry is celebrating winning its first award.

71 Rooms & Silk Suites hotel scooped the silver award in the Godiva Awards - the regional awards for the Leisure and Hospitality industry for Coventry and Warwickshire.

Guests had the opportunity to vote on-line or send postal votes to reward their favourite hotel.

Candice Stevens, Revenue Services Manager at 71 Rooms & Silk Suites, said the certificate will now proudly be displayed in the reception area.

"We are a relatively small hotel, competing against much larger national hotel chains," she said.

"Everyone who works at the hotel was thrilled to win this award.

"The fact that it is our guests who have voted for us shows the high satisfaction levels and that makes it even more special.

"We are different to other hotels in the region since our pitch-view rooms, which overlook the stadium bowl, double-up as small meeting rooms and there is only a handful of venues in Coventry which offers luxurious mini and junior suites.

"The Godiva Awards were introduced to reward excellence as well as creativity, flair and commitment and we were delighted with our success."

Think Pink Halloween day

Think Pink Halloween day

It was a scary pink Halloween day at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry in aid of a national charity.

Staff from throughout the multi-purpose venue dared to wear pink as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

They also took it in turns to cycle on a bike loaned from the Arena Health and Fitness club which was placed in the main atrium on a stage decorated with balloons.

About 30 members of staff from sales, guest services, hospitality, Arena Coventry Limited, Singers Bar and Bistro, accounts, human resources and the Christmas Circus Circus office cycled for 15 to 45 minute slots each from 7am until 7pm.

Sales executive Tanya Capon painted colleagues' finger nails pink for a donation and everyone wore an item of pink from neck scarves to ties.

Candice Stevens, Revenue Services Manager at the Ricoh's 71 Rooms and Silk Suites hotel, said the all-day cycling event was expected to raise several hundred pounds.

"Since it was Dare to Wear It Pink Day and Halloween, we thought we would combine the two and it worked really well," said Candice, who organised the event along with Mark Medley and Debbie Randle.

"Staff responded to the cycling challenge with great enthusiasm. Some staff hadn't cycled for five years but they were willing to peddle away in the middle of the atrium for half an hour which was great for promoting well being to staff and visitors.

"Matthew Lewis Displays in Coventry kindly blew up the helium balloons for us for free as well as donating some balloons and when everyone had finished cycling, they were given a sticker and a spooky treat!

"Singers Bar and Bistro was decorated with cobwebs, ghosts and witches hats and there was also a special spooky menu available with £2 from every menu sold going towards the campaign.

"Every penny that we raised, donated from staff and visitors to the Ricoh Arena, will go to the Breast Cancer Campaign which provides fantastic support for sufferers and their families in the UK who are affected by breast cancer."

New look for hotel website

New look for hotel website

The luxury hotel at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry has joined forces with a specialist travel company to upgrade its website.

The new-look 71 Rooms & Silk Suites website is now live following upgrade and design work by TravelCLICK.

Candice Stevens, revenue services manager at the 71 Rooms & Silk Suites hotel, said guests would be able to book rooms and check availability much more easily by logging on to www.71rooms.com or via the Ricoh Arena's website at www.ricoharena.com

She said: "Having a hotel at the Ricoh Arena is a huge bonus for both the local community and guests visiting the Ricoh Arena for weekend breaks, sporting events, concerts, dinner-dances, conferences and exhibitions.

"Coventry and Warwickshire is a popular region for tourists and our location means we are an ideal base for people visiting the area.

"The whole site looks more attractive now from a design perspective and as well as being easier to navigate, it is more informative because many of our guests are from outside the region.

"We wanted to make the hotel's web-site more user friendly not only in terms of making bookings so that availability and rates can easily be checked but also to give visitors more options.

"The revamped website allows users to book breakfast and dinner in the Singers Bar and Bistro, order champagne on arrival and look at the various packages that we have.

"It is unusual for a hotel to be located within a multi-use complex and that is one of our key selling points along with the fact that guests can visit the health club, have dinner at Singers or visit the casino during their stay.

"TravelCLICK are specialists at providing easy-to-use booking systems and we are delighted with the results.

"This has been launched just weeks after we discovered the hotel has been nominated in the Godiva Awards 2008 and we hope our new website will be another reason for guests to vote for us."

New face at the helm of Singers

New face at the helm of Singers

A former cross country athlete is now running the Singers Bar and Bistro at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry.

Mark Medley, who has been appointed manager of the 25-strong workforce at Singers, was among the successful West Midlands Schools' Cross Country Under-20s Championship winning team.

The 26-year-old is now focusing his efforts on the bar and bistro which is to undergo a small refurbishment to transform the coffee lounge.

"We are aiming to entice more businessmen and women to Singers and will refurbish the coffee lounge by introducing modern furnishings," said Mark, who is an avid Coventry City supporter.

"Our great location near the M6 means it is a great place to meet colleagues from throughout the country for coffee and lunch at meetings during the day.

"This is a big opportunity to be working for Compass, who run the hospitality operation at the Ricoh, since they are the world's largest contract caterer.

"My initial aim is to make the local community more aware of the superb menu that we have for lunches and evening meals at Singers.

"The standard of the food and value for money is fantastic and we are open seven days a week so we want to encourage more local people to come here to share their special celebrations with us."

Mark, who lives in Holbrooks, started his career in the industry when he joined Holiday Inn Coventry as a waiter when he left Coventry's Ernesford Grange School and Community College aged 16.

He stayed at the venue for five years, gaining promotion to bar manager, before moving to the Village Hotel and Leisure Club off the A45 in the city where he was restaurant manager for four years until his switch to the Ricoh Arena.

From the Far East to the Ricoh

From the Far East to the Ricoh

From Rugby to the Far East, the new guest services manager at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry has vast experience in the hospitality industry.

Helen Wilcox worked abroad for ten years as the rooms division manager in hotels in Tibet, Singapore and Shanghai before returning to the Midlands.

The 43-year-old, who lives in Rugby, worked in her home town on her return from working abroad before joining the £113 million complex.

"Tibet is totally different to any country that I have visited because it is very religious," she said.

"Singapore is very green and very organised and the sun shone every day while Shanghai is a very cosmopolitan city that is fast moving and while I was there it had three-quarters of the world's cranes in the city.

"I was abroad for ten years and I decided to come back to be with my family and friends.

"The Ricoh Arena is a great venue and everyone who works here is really friendly.

"I will be looking after the reception desk in the main atrium which involves being responsible for a team of 12 and assisting everyone who comes to the Ricoh whether it is for a meeting, dinner, exhibition or checking into the hotel.

"The guest services team also provides security for the whole of the venue and it is a really varied job. I am enjoying it."

Photos from Singer's motoring history and Singers FC - formerly Coventry City - have been hung in the entrance to the bistro and the 71 Rooms & Silk Suites hotel near a Singer 1929 Junior car.

"The rooms in the hotel are absolutely fantastic and I am sure Singers Bar & Bistro will become the place to come when you are at the Ricoh Arena," Cllr Batten said.

"Good luck to Singers Bar & Bistro - I am sure it is going to be a success."

Joe Elliott, a director at the Sky Blues, said the new-look bistro had been a great opportunity for the football club to work with the Ricoh and the Coventry Transport Museum to ensure the city's motoring heritage lived on.

"This is another fantastic place to improve on the most wonderful project to hit this city of Coventry," he said.

"I think it is a tremendous idea to call it Singers because the company played a major part in the social history of the industrial side of this city.

"I am sure the future is incredibly bright for this tremendous project which will go forward in leaps and bounds."

Coventry-based band The Big Easy entertained guests in the refurbished Singers Bar & Bistro which has been divided into a restaurant, bar area and coffee lounge with internet access and plasma television screens.

Ricoh Arena chief executive Daniel Gidney added: "We have come a long way since we opened and this is just one part of our on-going journey to improve our customers' experience.

"We were delighted the Lord Mayor was able to join us at the re-launch along with our sponsors and tenants, members of the Singers Owners' Club and special guests."
